Norma Nielson, PhD, CLU

Dr. Norma Nielson has been a Professor in the Haskayne School of Business since July 1997 when she moved to Calgary to assume the duties of the industry-endowed Chair in Insurance and Risk Management.  She holds a B.S. in Mathematics and Business/Computer Science from Northwest Missouri State University and an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.  In 1979 she became the first woman with a fellowship from the S.S.Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education to earn her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.  Prior to joining Haskayne, Dr. Nielson spent twenty years in academic positions at Oregon State University, the University of Southern California, and Iowa State University.  At Haskayne, Norma teaches primarily the life insurance and employee benefits courses but is involved with curriculum design and program planning for all aspects of the program in risk management and insurance.

Norma's research has produced over fifty publications, including articles in such journals as the Journal of Risk and Insurance and the Journal of Pension Economics and Finance.  She has shared her expertise with policy makers through presentations at the C.D. Howe Institute, the Public Utilities Boards of Newfoundland and New Brunswick, the Alberta Automobile Rate Insurance Board and the Ontario Expert Pension Commission.  She has conducted research projects for the Property & Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation (PACICC), the Insurance Bureau of Canada and the Law Commission of Canada and serves as Director of the Risk Studies Centre.  She currently is leading the Financial Markets Regulation Program at the U of C’s School of Public Policy while maintaining an active research program that focuses on retirement income issues.

 

Anne Kleffner, PhD

Dr. Anne Kleffner is an Associate Professor of Risk Management and Insurance at the Haskayne School of Business. She joined the University of Calgary in 1992. Anne received her BSBA from Creighton University, and a PhD in Applied Economics and Managerial Science from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. 

Anne teaches primarily in the undergraduate program in the areas of property and liability insurance and risk management. She also teaches in the Directors’ Education Program for the Institute of Corporate Directors and in the Executive MBA program. Anne’s particular areas of research interest include enterprise risk management, insurance solvency, and automobile liability compensation systems. She has published research in The Journal of Risk and Insurance, Risk Management and Insurance Review, The Journal of Insurance Regulation and The Ivey Business Journal.

Anne is an Associate Editor of The Journal of Insurance Issues and is a member of the Risk Theory Society. She is a Past President of the Board for Calgary Meals on Wheels. In her spare time Anne enjoys hiking, running, and traveling.

Micheal Ilnycky, MBA, FCIP

Sessional Professor

Director, Claims & Corporate Services Western Region, Royal Sun Alliance (RSA)

Ilnycky completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree (with a concentration in insurance and marketing) at Haskayne in 1999. He has since also earned a BA in conflict resolution and an MBA as well as professional insurance designations, CIP and FCIP. Prior to joining Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance in 2011, he had a long and successful career with Federated Insurance in claims, underwriting and project management.

School support and community commitment are strong themes in Ilnycky’s story. He has been a sessional instructor for Haskayne’s RMIN program since 2010, and continually strives to build relationships between students and industry professionals, mentoring and promoting job shadowing. In 2012, he accompanied a group of students in the International Insurance Markets course to Bermuda and London to learn first-hand about those insurance/reinsurance markets. Ilnycky has also been instrumental in bringing other insurance professionals into his class to ensure the students are exposed to topic-experts relevant to the given lecture.

An avid long-distance runner, Ilnycky is keenly interested in current events, politics and the stock market. He has held senior leadership positions in several community and charitable organizations.
